‘The Bach Choir featured both beautiful tone and diction. All the contrapuntal sections were clear, the words convincing.’ This is part of a review in the South China Morning Post of our St Matthew Passion performance in Hong Kong on Friday 18 April, with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra under Jaap van Zweden (pictured).
The performance was also broadcast live on HK Radio 4, which meant that those in the UK also had the opportunity to listen in. This, and the second performance the following evening, represented the culmination of a highly successful tour to China and Hong Kong during which the Choir also performed the Brahms Requiem in Shanghai and Hangzhou, and gave the world premieres of John Tavener’s O where, tell me where, a meditation on three Scottish folk songs, and Bob Chilcott’s Mo li hua.
