During lockdown we invited six brilliant, award-winning composers to write new works in answer to chorales from the St Matthew Passion.  They had complete freedom to choose their text, and challenge and explore different musical styles.

These new #bachinspired works have been recorded alongside the chorales which prompted them. It will be an exciting moment when we can finally share them with the world an innovative new album to be released in March 2022.

The project aims to promote dialogue with the past while contributing to the music of the future, and creates a legacy from an extraordinary year when singing live was not possible.

We need your help – become part of music history

Whilst we’ve funded the commissions and recording sessions, we need your help to produce this recording and to release it so that these new works can reach the widest audience possible.  If you contribute, you’re becoming a part of music history by supporting young composers and new works. In addition to this, contributors can unlock some of these unique, limited edition rewards:

  • First copy of the finished Bach Inspired CD
  • Bach Inspired CD + Limited Edition Bach Choir mug
  • Two tickets to the exclusive Bach Inspired album launch event
  • Limited edition CD signed by the Bach Inspired composers
  • A signed manuscript of one of our Bach Inspired compositions from a Bach Inspired composer of your choice
  • 1-1 composition lesson from any of our Bach Inspired composers (available in person or remotely)
  • A 1-1 conducting or vocal coaching session w/ David Hill MBE (available in person or remotely – only 1 left)
  •  Executive Producer credit on the Bach Inspired album
  •  VIP tickets to our St Matthew Passion performance (happening on April 10 2022 at the Southbank Centre) and a front row seat at our final piano rehearsal preceding it.

The Bach Choir is a charity run by volunteers and relies entirely on revenue from concert ticket sales, donations from individuals and support from grant-making bodies. In addition to our large-scale performances around the UK and abroad we are very proud of our music education programme, Vocalise! which has been running in inner-city London schools now for over 10 years.
