The latest in The Bach Choir’s discography is the world premiere recording of David Matthews’ Vespers, a work influenced by Monteverdi’s masterpiece of the same name. Recorded in The Lighthouse, Poole in July 2013, with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and soloists Katie Bray and Matthew Long, conducted by David Hill, Vespers is a grand oratorio which masterfully combines solemnity and exhilaration, and is a significant addition to the choral repertoire.
Composed to mark the centenary of the birth in 1895 of Sir Malcolm Sargent, Vespers was first performed by the Huddersfield Choral Society which commissioned the work. David Matthews’ music sets liturgical Latin texts alongside words by Rainer Maria Rilke translated into English by Babette Deutsch.
