Outreach Work
|
All of us who sing in The Bach Choir do so for the joy that comes from using the one instrument that we all have, the instrument that is common to all of us - the voice. Singing in a large choir can bring experiences and arouse emotions that are not to be found elsewhere, and many of us are lucky to have been brought up in families and educated in schools where singing has always been a part of life. Not everyone is so lucky. In many schools, music is seen to be peripheral to the main curriculum, if it features at all.
The Bach Choir has decided to share the thrill that comes from making music with those who may never have had the opportunity to try it for themselves. We are working in partnership with the Voices Foundation, to develop an innovative and entertaining outreach programme. We are offering children from socially deprived backgrounds a chance to join in workshops to sing together, initially to discover how wonderful it is to use their natural instrument, and subsequently to enjoy the thrill of performing. This will lead to the chance to join in singing with The Bach Choir, with our Musical Director, David Hill. Finally, the project will culminate in 2012 in a major live performance of a specially-commissioned work, The Angry Planet, by leading contemporary composer Bob Chilcott. The next couple of years will bring much excitement into many young lives.
There is much evidence that discovering and stimulating the artistic tendencies of children occupies their minds in a truly rewarding fashion, opening up the possibility of the discovery of hidden talents, and enhancing children.s development. The Bach Choir is proud to be making a contribution to a cause in which its members believe so strongly.
